Translated!

Many thanks to 3735-san over on the OS-tan board and Hinata, whose work I borrowed for this (especially 3735-san for the "sensitive spots", which was a great simplification of something I didn't quite understand and that was probably untranslateable anyway). Also to whispers who helped out with some tricky passages.

**A Pentagon Production**

Well, here's a translation, by Hinata, whispers and me, with some help from Rabid_Fangirl and Ordinary K. This is an awesome internet!

This one was a little bit tricky, and maybe I should have run it by Hinata a final time, but I was too impatient, so let's hope it's not TOO far off. If I messed anything up, do tell.
>> No.774
It was hard for me to translate.. I could do almost nothing to it. I'd like to pick up one sentence where WAHa was stuck. 「エロスと言うあんたの脳内がエロスなのよ!」 The idea is: Really pervy things are inside your brain: 1. that made you say, "Pervy!". {OR} 2, that came to the conclusion that my lecture was pervy (.. after seeing my lecture.) ---- 1. Things inside your brains are pervy! 2. Your way of thinking is pervy! 3. According to Homeko, XP is pervy because she thought Homeko's lecture was pervy. If XP were totally pure like a child(Yuzuyu-chan), she couldn't reach such a conclusion.
>> No.775
Yes, Hinata is correct about that one. I couldn't quite find a way to put it in English that didn't sound awkward, though, so I went with a slightly different but more natural-sounding line.

Thanks for bumping the thread so I didn't need to dig it out myself!

Here's the translation for that latest new strip. Some notes include:

"Flip side comiket" is "Ura komike", where "ura" is the last character of Futaba's most popular board, Nijiura, that is also the source of all these things. The "ura" kanji looks somewhat like the "natsu" kanji for "summer". "Summer comiket" is what you'd expect Homeo to say.

"Tsukamoto Gallon" is a character from a very, very silly H manga that the Toshiaki over at Nijiura like. "Kuribo", on the other hand, I have no idea about. Any hints are welcome!

Yet another strip! Thanks to Anonymous and htsuji for a lot of help, and to Sling for the "plop" sound effect that I really liked.

Lots and lots of references. This is what we've worked out so far:

* The title of the first strip is the title of a well-known Japanese children's book, "Hajimete no Otsukai" (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4834005259/).
* The box of condoms is a reference to "Nenaiko Dare da?", another children's book (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4834002187/). The Nijiura people have been in love with this one for a long time. They even made a song of the same title, featuring Waha, Musu, Choia and Toshiaki. The title means "Who's the kid who's not sleeping?", or something along those lines. There's a similar line on the side of the box, but with "using" instead of "sleeping". That would be "using" as in "protection", I guess, but I couldn't fit it in. It's pretty much impossible to read as it is, anyway.
>> No.1461
* Yes, that's Musca from Laputa. The Toshiaki love him, too. Everybody knows he's an asshole.
* Musca apparently works at 7-Eureka. A pretty obvious reference, that one.
* I guess you can get items you buy at the grocery store stickered as a proof-of-purchase instead of getting a bag and receipt. Somebody with more experience of Japan than me can expand on that.
* I really have no idea who those to people behind Homeo are. If anyone can explain them, please do.
* That "festival of grinding loins" might be a bit of a stretch as a translation, but I figure it's just supposed to be pretty silly anyway, so no matter.

Another new strip! Thanks to mogura and Anonymous for helping out, and if anything's wrong in here, I blame my fever.

The list of parties in the final panel might need some explaining, although I am not entirely sure I get it either. It was partly obscured in the original, but seems to contain the All Dicks Seriously Need to Die party, the Skin Peeling party, and the Hellowork party. Hellowork is http://www.hellowork.go.jp/, an unemployment agency. I guess the joke is that they're all about as painful.

All right, thanks to Anonymous, htsuji and mogura, I managed to piece together one more!

Some notes include:
* Nijiket is Futaba's own con event. The second one was held just recently. http://nijiket.net/
* The comic uses "「」-san" and "joshi-「」". The first I translated to "Anonymous", and the second I elided - it means "female 「」". "Female anonymous" just sounded too awkward. Incidentially, I learned that "「」" is pronounced "aki", to match the old "-aki" names.

We should warn our sensitive readers that when Dr. Norton and Homeko go at it, their language might not be suitable for delicate ears!

Well, I finally got back home and could finish it up. Thanks to all those who helped!

In the end, I went with "Nijiura" instead of the original "img". For those not in the know, Nijiura is a group of several incarnations of the most popular board on Futaba Channel. The boards are know by the servers they reside on, named img, dat, may and nov. img is the oldest, and also considered the source of most of the meme characters, such as the OS girls. Since most English speakers don't keep up with this, I decided to go with just plain "Nijiura" instead, in the hope that this name is at least slightly more well known.

Well, thanks to mogura and htsuji, here is a new batch of strips!

The characters that appear here that have not appeared before in this strip are all from a group of Nijiura meme characters who are all based on the maid Yuki from Suigetsu, the same game that Waha is from.

The characters appearing here are, in order of appearance, Yukiko (also called Yukko), Kiri, Dark Yuki ("Yami Yuki") and Chibi Yami-chan.

You can find more images of them all here: http://yuki.fsr.jp/yukisan/

The menu on the left goes in the order Yuki-san, Yuki-san (written with a kanji meaning "die" instead of "snow"), Dark Yuki-san, Chibi Yami-chan, Kiri-san, Yukiko-chan.

Another strip! Many thanks to htsuji, as usual.

Some notes:

  • The maids here are Shitai, Yakui and Dorei.
  • Yakui comes from "yaku" for medicine, and also "yaku" as in "yakuza". She's got a bad attitude, and really likes her drugs.
  • Dorei comes from "slave". She lugs around a big iron ball and isn't very happy.
  • I'm really not at all familiar with Shitai. Could any of you Toshiaki fill us in on her?
  • The "soybean petit pedo" is a stupid pun on "soybean peptide" that doesn't really work in English.
  • The first vitamin bottle is of the brand "Just some vitamins" ("Tada no VITAMIN"). It also says "Musubi". That's a reference to some Nijiura meme I don't know anything about. Explanation, anyone?
  • The second bottle, I can't figure out. Sorry!

After a long absence, here is another Homeo strip! Thanks once again to htsuji for helping out. This is a continuation of the Yukko storyline from earlier.

Neither htsuji nor me could figure out who Homeo is dressed up as here, though, nor what it says on his headdress. Can anyone help out?

>> No.2691

Homeo is dressed up as Gretel in Otogijuushi Akazukin:
http://www.konami.jp/visual/akazukin/character/character12.html

The word on the headdress is "かんぴょう", which is popular ingredient of sushi.
Her headdress is very similar to かんぴょうまき (a kind of sushi), so she is often painted with かんぴょうまき on her head.

Komepo makes an appearance! She's the "alternate colour" version of XP. She American, and she likes rice. These facts, and her name, all derive from the kanji 米, "kome", for rice. The characters 米 and ポ, "kome" and "po", are reminescent of X and P. Also, "America" is written with the rice kanji.

The names she lists are, of course, names of different types of Japanese rice.

Unfortunately, I got distracted and this is now extra late, but here's some Nijiura maid birthday material!

First of all, simuro's comic for Yakui and Kudoi's birthday on the 11th, and Hidoi's on the 12th. Seems that last year, img was down all day on her birthday. That's awful.

I've decided to translate "hidoi" as "awful". It could be "terrible" or "horrible" too, they all seem good matches, but I picked one arbitarily. Also, the titles are both puns in Japanese that didn't really translate, so I replaced them with similar but different puns.

Thanks to htsuji and the other people who dropped by to help out!

Big thanks to htsuji for helping to decipher this. It probably needs some explanation. To quote htsuji,

くちかみ Kuchikami is a ancient way of making sake. Researchers say ancient people utilized amylase in saliva to break starch down into sugar.

Trivia: So, some etymologists think the Japanese word "かもす(醸す)", "to brew" was derived from "かむ(噛む)", "to bite."

There isn't an English word for "kuchikami" that I can find. If you want more information, though, just Google the word!
