Now, I never really got into the whole Touhou thing, so usually I don't do those comics, but I finally had to admit I just love bkub's depictions of the Touhou girls too much to leave these strips alone.

Seems bkub's suffering from asthma, too.

Maybe one of you Touhou people out there can tell me why Chen's using the Chinese reading of her name and not the Japanese?

Chen's name uses the chinese reading because it means "bitter orange." It's a very loose pun, since all of the Yakumo family's names can be read as colors of visible light.(Yukari=Violet, Ran=Indigo, Chen=Orange) It's also sort of like a hierarchy.

ZUN likes to include characters from various locations/cultures (scarlet sisters from France, Alice from Romania, etc). Chen seems to be Chinese in origin, from details like her name and theme song (named "Diao ye zong"). Her dress also seems to have a very Chinese feel to it.

Has he drawn any more Touhou comics? I don't speak a word of Japanese, and searching his blog through trial-and-error doesn't work real well on 28.8k dialup. I'd love to see more of these translated, if there are any more and you have the patience for it.

Well, I stopped translating these for a while because bkub decided to start experimenting with drawing strips with plain old pen and paper, and also went completely out of his mind at the same time, making the strips even less comprehensible than usual.

But he's back in shape again now, so I decided to clear out as much of the backlog as I could. So here we go, with a strip about the fearsome youkai Chen!

Next up, we have... Well, to be honest, I have no idea.

bkub suggests, as an explanation, that they probably got the wrong person.

I think this is the point where bkub gets back to normal levels of dementia. This is pretty straightforward!

As a note, I usually try to translate all sound effects, but in this case "ZUN" seemed like it should be left alone.
