Wai wai wai, I suspect I was the first to figure this one out! http://www.flyingmachines.org/hens.html"William Samuel Henson was an engineer and inventor who was familiar with the aeronautical work of George Cayley. Discussions with his associate John Stringfellow led to his design for a large passenger-carrying steam-powered monoplane, with a wing span of 150 feet, named "ARIEL - The Henson Aerial Steam Carriage," for which he received a patent in 1843.""The Aerial Steam Carriage never took to the air, but it nonetheless registered firmly in the minds and imaginations of multitudes of people to became one of the strongest archetypal images of early aeronautics."
It is a lot more appropriate than the manga's WW1 era biplane.
Well, to be fair, when Mori wrote that bit, she hadn't yet "levelled up" and been "equipped" with her own personal researcher. The anime crew did a much more thorough job of researching the details. Hell, that's what they blew all the money on, and why there's no present appearance of hope for a second season. You win some, you lose some.
Good work!
It really amazes me how Mori's artwork has changed for the better now (Volume 7) than her previous (Volume 1). William looks totally different (and more handsome) today. heh heh
From wich anime is that?A model of the Henson carriage, powered by a steam engine actually lifted into the air.
>>1616Volume 7? What are you talking about?
Every chapter after 43 will eventually be in Volume 7....
Oh yeah, didn't count correctly.
what is the title of the anime / manga?
Emma
Why are William's and Eleanor's eyes yellow? They should be green and blue. Otherwise, it would have been a great kawaii version of the main characters.
How to "Mori"
Every time I see Mori's self-image, I always get the impression that I'm looking at something crudely carved with a pen into one of the desktops in the physics lecture hall...
This is definitly the best maid costume for sale anywehere. It resembles the Emma maid costume almost precisely don't you think?http://milky-ange.com/html/catalogue/maid/rita_s.htm
Oh, thank goodness. I thought I'd NEVER finish these. I miss FON.
You guys are so awesome. It makes me fear that a commercial translation could never match this kind of quality and attention to detail.Minor nitpick: ^_^;;Thus Miss Hartwick solitary walks are quite unusual. Thus Miss Hartwick's solitary walks are quite unusual.
Corrected
Hate to do this to you, but here is another error:The name "Mrs. Trollope" may be an referenceThe name "Mrs. Trollope" may be a reference
Too late!
>>1526I will be willing to bet real money that any commercial translation (whether anime or manga) will steal.. *ahem* be strongly inspired by... the Guides.
I've thought that, as well. I do know we've pushed fan expectations pretty high in that regard; I feel very proud of that.
Yes...Though the saying is that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery", we do know that nothing says "We think you did a great job." quite as well as "We're going to rip off your work and present it as our own." :-)
or they could translate the Emma Victorian Guide.
>>1550We'll get around to it. Some day.
No we won't. Even the Red-Headed League couldn't accomplish that task.
Now open in Shinjuku, *the* place to visit for fans of Mori Kaoru: Victorian Café Emily.http://hagemaru.parfait.ne.jp/maid/emi/emi001.html
AWESOME
OH MY GAWD i would totally go there and spend a year's worth of income...thats so awesome..If the show is so popular it warrants its own cafe, i REALLY hope it warrants them making another season of Emma! (hopehopehopehope)

I can feel like densha otoko!
High Tea GET!Although I'd probably be too self conscious about getting table manners right to really enjoy myself. :(
Uniforms are so authentic. But without head shots, I can't tell if they're dumpling or lettuce. T_T
Makes me want some tipsy cake... *drool*
I want to work here :[
Freak of Nature, just what do you do anyways? Leaving poor whispers on her own? I hope you're not looking up eligible women as a leisure activity!
Well, Emma Fan, I've always been far less than second fiddle on the manga translations. I came on board late in the game, for the anime translations - the manga has always been whispers' purlieu. As for what I do... I'm an historian. Currently, I'm dealing with a seriously messed-up private life that is consuming my time and the lining of my stomach walls in equal measure.
...and I really shouldn't say this, but there are two Ns in "questionnaire" (the etymology, needless to say, is French).
I know.Oh, well, I suppose I ought to go off and devote myself to the pursuit of eligible women as a leisure activity. Actually, that sounds nice - and I'm certainly very much in the process of becoming eligible, myself. Any bits of crumpet... *ahem* I mean, sweet ladies.... out there that might be interested?
plz
Emma Vol 4 187.png
"I'm sold" means "You have convinced me -- I'm going to change it." I already have, actually.
I found three errors. (a) 187.png, Titleホイスト is surely "whist".This game came to Japan in Meiji era. Those days, Japanese translators tended to use ホ, ホァ, ホィ... for "wh-". (Even today, some Japanese pronounce "ho" when they read "wh-.")I have read a Japanese translation of Jane Austen's novel, in which people were playing "ホイスト". And Japanese dictionary says "ホイスト" is "whist."(b) 188.png, panel 3"European manga" should be "European movies." (I have typed "映画", not "漫画".)(c) 188.png, panel 4"主人" is not "husband" here. It's "master (employer of maids)."The translation may be something like: Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Agreed. Thank you.
So is Mori gay or what?
Signs point to yes. :)
I read somewhere that she has a bf but maybe I was dreaming.
>>1500Doesn't mean she can't be attracted to women, too. ;)
>>1501But being gay, by definition, would exclude her from being interested in men...Ah, silly talk. I think she's just a very friendly person who is interested in lots of stuff.
She might be a normal perverted woman. Or she might be bisexual. But she seems a little gay to me, I dunno. I mean, check out how she draws herself. Not male, not female but leaning towards male. The girl has some gender issues, yo.
I'm straight and I'll randomly get all ";333; YOURE CUTE~~~ ahh~~ <3" on girls.*__*; She's probably just friendly or bi.
I'm actually a bit nervous about what kind of reaction this will trigger..
This needs more than just those four screens to be practical.
Well, I burst out laughing.
Interesting comparison
What a nonsense I'd say ;P
What series is that on the right anyway?
O.O;;; i hope your kidding...Thats Revolutionary Girl Utena...great series, but really any relation between that and Emma is just silly fun ^_^
