I've read some. It wasn't vanilla. It was Hakim's very dirty fantasy of what he'd like to do to Emma.

All right, the requested and long awaited translation of Takahiro Awatake's _Forgery Space_ is finally done, thanks to an awesome collaborative effort by Hinata, Freak of Nature and me!

The original manga can be found here:
http://www.cx.sakura.ne.jp/~awatake/manga/cc03/n00.html

Do read this one, because it is just awesome.

As soon as I get home, I'll fix that page. It's the last one so I can just repost that without breaking the ordering...

As for the story, there's a lot about it I love, but what really gets me is the last line. Where you this kind of story would usually have some sort of statement about how the main character is the only one who'll remember her, you get the opposite - he's already given up on her. He couldn't keep up with her when she was around, and he has even less chance when she's gone.
>> No.689
See, that just goes to show that two readers tend to interpret even a simple text with radical variations. To me, that last sentence implied that he was aware that the "brainwashing effect" would completely expunge Mizuho from his memory.

(Erroneously posted as the start of a separate thread, too - will someone oblige by zapping that thread?)
>> No.690
Oh, I do agree that it could be read that way, but even if that's it, he's resigned to it - he's making no effort to fight it. I think it's intentionally written to make it ambiguous as to whether there's an active suppressing of awareness of the outside world, or whether it's just the old group mentality doing its thing- "the weirdo girl is gone, and good riddance".
>> No.691
He seems to have some sort of obsession with architecture (as do some other mangaka like Nihei Tsutomu or Katsuhiro Otomo) but then again, lots of mangaka have some weird fetish for structures (guns, cars, bikes, tanks, breast fat tissue, etc).

Love his work. Would love to see more, esp. the stories involving aliens.

I quite like these quirks that a lot of artists have. Hayao Miyazaki has his airplanes, as does Mohiro Kitoh (although Miyazaki likes the propeller-driven ones more, and Kitoh the modern jets). Otomo's cityscapes are quite mind-boggling.

Awatake's style is sort of reminescent of Masamune Shirow's. Shirow also has the architecture thing going, and Awatake's characters also look vaguely like older Shirow art.

After being continuously exposed to them on Nijiura, I felt I finally had to make the effort to translate some of bkub's somewhat incomprehensible comics.

They're all from http://blog.livedoor.jp/bkub/. They're also not exactly easy to get, and I'm limiting myself to translating the ones I actually understand. However, if you do get them, they're pretty hilarious.

First off, a Lucky Star strip featuring Tsukasa's catchphrase "dondake~". I'm using the translation Strato used in the a.f.k. subs for this.

Everybody's been curious about the book that Emma borrows from Mudie's in episode 4. Much speculation has been voiced about whether or not it was an actual book.

I am happy to report that I have finally identified it, after much thought and investigation.

The book (seen here, with the title cover in a characteristically Japanese right-side position) is "Rosaline Woodbridge; or, The Midnight Visit, a Romantic Tale" (1827), by Hannah Maria Jones. It's the terribly romantic story of a young girl, the daughter of a gamekeeper, who falls in love with a nobleman. I won't bore you with the details, but there's a lame deus ex machina near the end, where the girl is revealed to be actually a misplaced noble child... and therefore eligible to marry the nobleman.

Geh, what a weak ending...

Anyway, I am convinced this is the one.

I've found a synopsis here: http://www2.shu.ac.uk/corvey/cw3/ContribPage.cfm?Contrib=441

Is futaba aware of this yet?
>> No.791
I was thinking about that "Vol. 1" - it seemed sort of odd to me. So I decided to look it up.

Now I can tell you not only the book, but the edition. You see, "Rosaline Woodbridge" was originally published in 1827, by George Virtue in London. This first edition was in one volume of 721 pages.

However, another edition was issued, later the same year, published by Mathew Iley in London. This edition was in three volumes. Undoubtedly, this (or a later republication of the same version) is the book that Emma borrows (or rather, borrows the first volume of).

For a full listing of the romantic novels of Hannah Maria Jones, see this URL:

Why is the book in three volumes? That puzzled me, until I read this:

You might be interested to know that that "lame deus ex machina near the end" was horribly, depressingly common in victorian writing. Almost every other book published at the time included some variant of it. Jane Austen makes fun of it (and just about every other victorian convention of writing) in her Northanger Abbey, a really fun read if you can get into writing of that time period.
