>>9 is a bit lacking in detail. If you're going to scan manga, here's a good way to do it: Scan at high resolution, like 600 DPI, and completely ignore colour curves. Then run a threshold on the image, picking a value that gets you a good reproduction of the screentones and lines, and after that, scale down to a more manageable size. The results will be a lot better than most other techniques.

If you do your scans the way I described earlier, which will get you almost perfect whites and blacks, you can use PNG with just, say, 16 colours, and get files that are almost as small as, or smaller than JPEGs, and are much better quality.
