William is a turd. I haven't read the manga, but all I can say is that breach of contract comes with serious penalties in that era, and I don't see a good way out for him. The turd.

I was wondering if you could do something about the timing, though. Some lines are coming in late or staying too long. I understand that adding lead-out is very nice most of the time, but it's not appropriate when the atmosphere is supposed to be tense. I'm also of the school that doesn't like timing across scene changes. You could also consider adding lead-in to help the reading process. I've been examining timing recently, and can't help saying this. But thanks, really!

I feel kinda bad for William. He's giving into the pressures of society, and it's going to hurt him and those around him. Although as someone above posted, he is being a bit of a turd. Does anyone have any information on marriage contracts/preposals in the Victorian Era? I'm trying to google, but I can't find much.
It's not even a question of contract - he can do plenty of damage to her reputation just by refusing her. Remember, always, that among Victorians social standing wasn't a simple society pissing game - it could literally make or break your fortune. If William plays with Eleanor's heart he risks destroying his family's reputation and by extension business prospects, not to mention chances of acquiring a title.
i'm not sure how william is going to get out of this one, but let's hope he suffers a whole lot before he does. i almost hope that william would get married to eleanor, if he is going to be such a weakling he deserves someone equally pathetic.
i just don't see hakim or arthur giving in to something like this, so i am starting to lose all sympathy for william. boo!
i don't like monica, especially in this episode. she is crazy!
as far as canceling the engagement, i don't think the story would follow conventional rules since it has broken so many already, although it shall be interesting seeing william worming himself out of this one.
William is an indecisive dick sometimes. It's very human and consummately frustrating. Good thing we know he makes the right choice in the end.
This is slewing slightly off-topic, but has anyone else wondered about Colin's future? If he follows the traditional pattern (first son inherits, second goes into clergy/academia, third goes military), he's the Army and/or Navy brat and he'll be just the right age to serve in the Great War. When you consider how timid he is it's kind of amusing.

Hmm... Actually, i kinda of like this episode - especially the proposal part, despite William's shocking act of proposal. At last, there's a bit of the anime that is faithful to the manga - down to the dialogue between Hakim and Monica(noticably, the anime slows down a little at this part)!! And actually, the proposal isnt that bad... think about it, if William didnt propose to Eleanor at this time, Mrs Trollope's trip to London wouldnt coincide with Dorothea's, and Dorothea wouldnt be able to "lend" Emma to Mrs Trollope, and Emma wouldnt meet William again... it's all fate.
Ooo and yes, cant wait for Episode 5!!! They finally meet!!!
