Victorian Romance Emma Second Act Episode 01: "A New House" (76)

1 Name: whispers : 2007-04-19 05:12 ID:TV+HGwjS [Del]

Emma gets off to a rocky start as a maid in the Molders house, especially with Nanette, the lady's maid. But Nanette has her troubles, into which Emma has a surprising amount of insight, since they happen to involve matters of the heart...

Work has begun.

Hooray!

I watched a raw of ep 01 yesterday and while I couldn't understand most of the dialogue, I did get the gist of what was going on and it was very pleasant. Really looking forward to a subtitled release, as are a bunch of people I've introduced to Emma (both manga and anime).

Thanks, whispers <3

Whispers did your guys' raw act really weird by any chance? The reason I ask is because my friend downloaded the raw but when she played it, it was played upside down. @_@ Need less to say we were both quite surprised.

5 Name: whispers : 2007-04-19 18:58 ID:TV+HGwjS [Del]

Wow, I've heard of that happening, but never seen it. Our raw is weird enough to tie our encoder in knots, but not THAT weird. Someone who knows video better than I could probably explain how that could happen.

6 Name: Xtian : 2007-04-19 23:28 ID:r//cqEs9 [Del]

I remember a few years ago that there was an option in a player (don't remember which player it was) that made some video's display upside down. You might want to google your video player and upside down information.

watched ep 01 again, made me cry a little T_T sniff

7 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2007-04-20 04:47 ID:Heaven [Del]

Upside-down playing was a bug in early DivX codecs, I think?

I suggest you tell your friend to install new codecs and see if it helps. I suggest ffdshow: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow

8 Name: Xtian : 2007-04-20 10:59 ID:r//cqEs9 [Del]

i would suggest http://www.gomplayer.com , plays everything without having to find audio/video codecs separately, no spyware, all free. Gotta love those korean programmers. Really easy to use and customize.

So far the raw played nicely on my BSPlayer ver 1.22.
And the scenes are just so beautiful! I love the colors of this second season and got over all my fears about the looks on the character (Sure, William seems a little bit too skinny to me...) But hey! Emma and all the others are lovely. And HANS!!!!!!! My Hans! My dear Hans... he has such a vo-ooooice!!!!!!!!!!!! XD

Waiting for the translated version of this episode... er.. and of ep00 too...
just kidding. No pressure... no pressure

were did you find the ep 1 of the second season

11 Name: Anonymous : 2007-04-23 14:33 ID:dlreX1JR [Del]

At first I balked at the idea of adding a new character, but then I realized it would be odd for a lady of Dorothea's stature to not have her own lady's maid. Is this going to be a sort of "accuracy fix" like the model airplane?

12 Name: servidor : 2007-04-23 15:03 ID:dVP+bUed [Del]

The concern, I think, for many fans of the manga is that later in the story Emma acts as Mrs. Molder's lady's maid a couple of times, in key events. How the anime is going to make Emma take that position is a good question?

13 Name: Xtian : 2007-04-24 13:20 ID:2GkHVxhb [Del]

I think by having that new character and the way Emma behaved as she did in ep 01, makes her an excellent candidate for being a lady's maid, definitely more so than how mori-san handled it in the manga as it seemed more coincidental to give a newcomer such an "honor".

I see you guys released episode 01. Thanks for that, now it's just a case of waiting for the tracker to come back ='D

I wonder if it'll do this with every release. Isthere some massive surge of Emma fans that crashes the tracker? =o

Yes, the tracker has some configuration problem we haven't figured out yet. Eventually it'll all get sorted out, but right now it's quite frustrating.

Just watched Episode 1 & as usual a literate, excellent sutitle, as always with you.

And I'm very grateful for this - I love Kaoru Moris' work, have all the Manga & extend my thanks to you.

A question - were there artifacts in the RAW?
And is it impossible to get higher bitrate RAWs?

Ep 00 at 1100; Ep 01 at 868 is kinda low by 2007 standards, although I checked with your earlier Emma releases & they were around the same 800/900.

Guess I've got used to higher bitrates in the intervening year(s).

Please do not take this as a criticism - it's just that the settings & animation are so gorgeous. I'm a huge [iichan] fan.

175 megs, which translates to the 800-900 kbps bitrate is still very much standard. If you want higher quality, buy the DVDs. We are not out to replace them, but only to produce something that is good enough to watch.

18 Name: whispers : 2007-04-25 13:10 ID:y01kAUvL [Del]

We're quite frustrated with the raws we're getting... we're happy to be able to produce anything watchable at all out of them.

19 Name: Jerry : 2007-04-25 18:34 ID:VJ7aMAUn [Del]

Thank, you so much for doing this!

You are right about the DVDs. I bought the first season, and will be buying the second season as soon as they start releasing it. Since, unfortunately I doubt Emma will ever be released in R1, it is the best way I could think of to support the show. Besides, I think that DVD sales of the first season are part of the reason they decided to continue the show.

The first season is available in a less expensive boxset now.

Anyway, thanks again for all your hard work!

Some comments in response to some previous comments:

"Maid of all works" (also "maid of all work" or "maid of allworks") is a Victorian term for a maid that does all the work in a small household. That is not a mistake.

There are some video glitches in this episode that are side effects of the way we processed the video, which is in a horrific format. This is the best we can do right now, we're kind of learning as we go.

The video is fuzzy and soft-focus because that's how it was produced, and that's how it appears on Japanese TV. I'm thinking they're going for some sort of romantic soft-focus thing, but as a result, we get all kinds of well-meaning (and some not-so-nice) comments about it.

There will probably be minor mistakes here and there. Enjoy your free anime. We're not pros, we're a ragtag group of fans who love this series, and we're trying very hard to do our best.

BTW re "maid of all works" this is clearly correct - enjoy the maid in this UK city council site - http://www.chester.gov.uk/main.asp?page=905

"A maid of all works would expect to earn about £18 a year, or £22 if she was over 25 years of age".

a bit off topic here but i am curious, the second ep for emma second season was supposed to air on tuesday or so... but it's been a few days and there's not a single raw of it in sight, did something happened with the second ep schedule?

30 Name: Nico M : 2007-04-27 01:35 ID:yVCWX067 [Del]

If it's the one I think it is - the 230MB .mkv 'raw' is hard-subbed & unusable for English subs (I think the subs are Chinese but not sure at all of that, could be Korean for all I know). I've searched for a true raw of this but to no result (it does have better video, albeit still soft-focus-look).

So - In any case it looks like the best available raw was used for this Engsub Ep 1 - and I for one am jolly grateful & why should we ever think otherwise, as Whispers says - they do this for love not for money!

BTW - there's a series of Podcasts on the Japanese site & can anyone tell me what "normal rattan" might be a translation of?

Well, the first thing one learns when it comes to machine translation is that Google and Babelfish are equally useless, because they use SYSTRAN which basically has no clue at all about Japanese. Using either of those will only make you more confused.

The titles seem to be "Searching for Tsunetou" (or "Tsunefuji" - it seems to be a name) and "Searching for Tsunetou: Conclusion".

Oh, well I didn't care about the fuzzyness... I saw some serious interuptions in the video in the last 5 minutes, that I never noticed in the first season subbed by your group. I would describe it like for example in the ending song.. half the screen would blip a fluorescent green and purple lines, etc.

It doesn't seem like a processing issue... Hmm, I will screen cap whan I mean and repost... be back in a few...

As WAHa mentioned, that's Tsunetou, referring to Akiko Tsuneto. She's the one who did an assistant radio personality for Emma Radio first season.
Emma radio first season had Sayaka Ohara(voice actoress for as Grace) as a main radio personality, but they have small budget for the 2nd season and can't afford it, so they chose A. Tsuneto for the 2nd season and so titled it as "Where's Tsuneto?".

37 Name: emma fan : 2007-04-27 07:27 ID:4LVOLVAl [Del]

ok, well it happens too fast for me to screen cap, but it happens around time: 23:16 - 23:19 (this is an example, there were a couple other similar blips)- observe top half of image.

see caption for approximate area where it occurs:
http://www.glowfoto.com/viewimage.php?img=27-073529L&y=2007&m=04&t=png&rand=8744&srv=img4

I don't want to seem picky, and if I do, I apologize, I am only doing this just in case its something you can fix.

Thank you again, I really do appreciate all your work.

Umm.. Minor nitpick (but for some reason it sent me into a fit of hysterics..). The plural for "maid of all work" is "maids of all work", not "maid of all works".

I liked the second version of the song that was the OP in the first series (now it seems to be the ED, unless the first episode was an anomaly), but I never did realize it was a "Celtic Version". I do hear what sounds like an Irish harp (though a very strange sounding one), and pennywhistle. Other than that, gee.. the main instrument sounds like a calliope, whatever it is...

Actually, it's the singular that is often "maid of all works". The plural, as used in the episode, is then "maids of all works".

Can you give times for the other two "blips"?

I'm trying to track them down in my encode, so I can go back through the raw and see if they exist in there. I'm going to see if there's another way to process that raw, and if so, there might be a V2 in the works.

Interesting indeed. In the past, the term I'd come across was "maid of all work". There was that BBC "reality show" where a family moved into a "1910 house" - they had to live like they did at the turn of the 20th century, this meant gas lighting, outdoor privy (and chamber pots..), manual laundry, making Bubble and Squeak in a coke-fired oven, etc. And they hired someone as a "maid of all work". Searching the Web, you find the term "maid of all work" commonly used (most interestingly to describe aircraft such as the An-2), in period literature and Merriam-Webster's dictionary and the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica. But search for "maid of all works" and you get many hits as well, including 19th century census documents, and Jane Austen.

To me "maid of all works" sounds awkward and ungrammatical (I'd always associated the word "works" as "deeds", as in biblical usage), but I suppose at the time it was definitely in use. In fact, it seems both terms were.

Forgive me if I regard Jane Austen's orthography as authoritative. Singular "maid of all works", plural "maids of all works".

Just watched the 0th and 1st episode of the 2nd act. Thanks for subbing it Whispers!
I must say that the anime version is a lot more dramatic than the manga...
Any idea if the 2nd act finishes the story in the manga? I.e. Is it up to book 7? A scene in the ending (when Silhouette of a Breeze was played) had Emma dancing with William. If that's the case, the anime should extend to at least book 5 right?
Man! I'm really looking forward to watching the other episodes! (How many are there anyway?)

hummm... I am positive that I saw in the 2nd season promo: "And now... into the shocking conclusion".
That has to mean this is the final season and they pretend to end everything. They better be at least 24. If they add new filler episodes... argh I don´t want them to cook the story in a rush!

Since somebody already noticed it on the tracker and posted it on Tokyotosho, I guess we might as well announce the v2 release here too:

http://torak.no-ip.info/tracker/torrents/Victorian_Romance_Emma_Second_Act_-_01_-_A_New_House_%5bv2%5d%5biichan%5d.avi.torrent

That should fix the video bugs, and as a bonus also that typo.

In response to Iskandar Taib's post:
Hmm... I went to check the Manga. Emma spelted it as "Jounse", "Jounes" and "Jouns" in the letters she addressed to William (Book 5, Chapter 34, Pages 113,114 and 129 respectively- Kadokawa Comics Boy Series Publication (Traditional Chinese))I have the feeling that Elenor stopped writing that letter to William because she spelt his surname wrongly - writing "Jon" for the first 3 letters (Book 5, Chapter 34 sequel Page 133- Kadokawa Comics Boy Series Publication (Traditional Chinese))

And that's not the only spelling error apparently...In the letter she writes to William, instead of writing "I also want to meet you", she writes "I also wont to meet you". Changes the meaning of the sentence quite a bit... (Book 5, Chapter 34, Page 124- Kadokawa Comics Boy Series Publication (Traditional Chinese))

But I prefer the "Jones" spelling - it's a lot more British to me than the other one...

65 Name: whispers : 2007-05-09 09:38 ID:y01kAUvL [Del]

"Jounse" was the original official spelling, and for the manga I changed that to "Jounes" because that surname appears in Victorian era census records, whereas "Jounse" does not. And thus began the "Jounes" spelling, which held sway on the net for a good long time.

Over time, "Jones" began to appear more often, however, on the Emma official website and in the CMX translations, and you'll see "Jones" written in a Second Act episode soon. For now I'm stubbornly hanging on, but I imagine eventually I might have to bite the bullet and change it.

If it's changing to Jones on the official website and anime, then it's probably becaused they realized their error like with the model airplane. I don't see a reason not to go with Jones now.

It's pretty obvious that Mori didn't want it to be "Jones", though, because then she would have just used it from the start. Thus we assumed she wanted an alternate spelling, but went with one that actually existed.

There are PLENTY of manga where they butcher english words/names/etc. My first encounter was back in 1989 when I was watching the original Bubble Gum Crisis and while Nene was trying to hack into a system the words "The Password is in the Wrong" appears, I couldn't stop laughing. ^O^ I don't think they do it on purpose, it's just that english is not their primary language and even the editor's might not catch or care.

I've seen plenty of american shows where they butcher foreign languages accidentally, probably because they aren't going to hire someone just to check the accuracy. Also the writers might not care for lack of time or lazyness, probably because that's not the main point.

Same here, i think names doesn't really matter whether it's Jounes or Jounses or Jones or Smith. Will is still Will. Emma is still Emma... =) As I was taught in one of my research classes..

"The main thing, is to keep the main thing, the main thing." =D

Isn't it "Jounes" because the "u" is the makes the "o" into a long "o" in Japanese-English translation?

Not that I'm an expert or anything... :P

...and yes, English is often butchered. I also don't think it's intentional, though. I laughed a lot in BGC, too. :P

73 Name: whispers : 2007-05-14 04:32 ID:Xpm7gV7N [Del]

Good guess, but no. It was written as "Jounse" in nice, friendly ENGLIGH letters below William's portrait on the official website.

Just because it's on an official website doesn't mean it's correct. =) throughout the show (and many other anime shows) there's plenty of typos. They spelled "Cataroge" intead of "Catalogue" in episode 4 or 5 i think (and I'm no expert of Victorian English but I don't think they spelled it like that). Many english names and words are misspelled in official japanese books/websites/etc. I think the most apparent are in Japanese Video Games--before they are released in the US--they butcher every english name/word it seems haha. It's like listening to JPOP/KPOP/CPOP music... you hear english words in there but they make no sense at all most of the time and a lot of times in the lyric books they are misspelled.

The main audience of these shows are Japanese people so they usually wouldn't mind, we English speakers do notice, that is all. I saw plenty of typos in MAJOR theatrical releases too (plenty from Ghibli's Studio as well).... and we have nothing better to do than to nitpick on this stuff... the world is a good place =D
