Unfortunately, there aren't a whole lot of VAs that do English accents.

Worst-case scenario: they get dubbed by Americans. Using American accents.

or even better... those who worked on the game Dragon Quest VIII?
(I have not idea of voice acting business... but I loved those voices!)

Emma is probably the ONLY show which I'd actually want to watch a dub of. BUT it would have to be done right. No Standard American Anime Dub Voices. You'd have to hire the crew that does Masterpiece Theater for BBC. Just think of the range of characters, and the possibilities. There are all sorts of characters, with backgrounds, who belong to different social classes. The upper crust (the Campbells, the Joneses) would talk differently than Al would. The people in London would sound different than those in Haworth. You'd throw in Cockney for the little flower girl in the street. Kelly Stoner would talk like an educated, cultured woman of the middle class, so would Emma. Hans (and others in the household) recently came from Germany. Some of them still speak German (and you can have High German and Low German, though an English speaker probably wouldn't know the difference). Most of the maids would have pretty strong lower class accents. Hakim? He'd talk like an Eton boy, but would lapse once in a while into an Indian accent.

Done right, and authentically, this would be an awesome dub (this coming from someone who HATES dubs). But done like a regular anime dub, with American accents, it would be HORRIBLE.

Agreed. I'll normally watch a series at least in part dubbed, if it's a pretty good one, but for Emma, only perfection would be acceptable. A proper English (or German, in some cases) cast, with proper period accents, and nothing less.

Lower class accents? Care to name them?

Anyway, I'd imagine that the majority of the Molders house maids (including Tasha) speak in a Yorkshire accent (think of Emmerdale).

Emma on the other hand, being drilled by Mrs. Stowner, would speak in a RP accent. In fact, most of the characters would speak in a RP accent. Hakim would also speak in an RP accent.

Adele, I always thought would speak in a French accent.

Cockney comes to mind.. but most would probably talk the same way you hear people talking in "Oliver Twist". They'd call people above their station "guv'nor" and such. Lots of examples, just watch any of the BBC offerings. Even Poirot (which takes place a good 70-80 years hence.. I've always imagined Al speaking like Inspector Japp, just not so, uh, pompous or sarcastic.) Or the Chimney Sweep in Mary Poppins. Don't know if there's an actual name for this, but it's fairly distinct from the way the upper classes speak (think Wooster, or Jeeves) - a rougher, less refined sort of speech. Japanese has an equivalent - tradesmen might refer to one as "oniisan" or "oneesan" for instance. There's even a Japanese equivalent to Cockney called Shitamachi (similar because it's restricted in area - said to be around Akasuka - and "working class").

Maybe you would like to check out the book "Pygmalion"? It gives some good written examples of cockney... The context of the story is also interesting - about how a cockney-speaking flower girl learns to speak like a duchess - you can make comparisons between the "lower-class" language and "upper-class" language...

I second that notion.
An American voice over?????
Are you trying to sign a death warrant to this fine peice of work?
The original Japanese is fine but I think using a mix of cockney, refined queens english, and german intonation will give this story more cultrual depth.

On a side note the original voice acting for Emma is the same as Urd of "Ah My Goddess", Ms.Yumi Toma showing how talented this voice actress really is.

Hmmm... well, I'm gonna need more time if I'm going to do the whole cast, but here's a short list for now. Since I'm hoping Geneon licenses Emma, here's my hopeful Geneon cast.

Role - Actor (Known Role)
-----------------------------------------
William - David Vincent (Van - GunSword)
Emma - Julie Ann Taylor - (Sophia - Last Exile)
Al - Taylor Henry (The Count - Gankutsuou)
Hans - Crispin Freeman (Alex Row - Last Exile)

I'll take another stab later if FUNimation licenses. Maybe tomorrow... GitS:SAC:SSS is about to start on SciFi, so off I go! :P

Yumi Toma (seiyuu for Emma) also did the voice for Deedlit in the Record of Lodoss War OVA :D

I agree with you for the most part Zansa. I haven't watch GunXSword so, I'm not familar with David Vincent but, I am familar with the other va's. I think they might be a good choice. I think Crispin Freeman would be a good choice for Hans. I guess I'm saying that cuz I'm a big fan of his.

I really can't see no other company doing Emma besides Geneon. They'll will do justice to the original. The other companies will butcher it. Geneon is one of fav's companies. There are just some anime that are ment to be acquired by a certain company. Even if the dub isn't the best it should be bearable to hear and even so, I still the original which, I love dearly.

David Vincent is a newcomer, I'm not surprised people haven't noticed his roles yet. And I agree, Geneon should be the one to license Emma. I just know they'll give it quality treatment in terms of picture and sound... the only thing that would suck would be the 2 month wait between DVDs. :P

FUNimation, on the other hand, might do it justice also. At least with the packaging they are bar none the best company right now. They also provide excellent dubs... which leads me to my next list. :P

FUNimation's Dub?

Emma - Colleen Clinkenbeard (Riza Hawkeye - FMA)
William - Travis Willingham (Roy Mustang - FMA)
Hans - Bob Carter (Gorobei - Samurai 7)
Eleanor - Caitlin Glass (Winry - FMA)
