Kamichu (375)

So, a lot of us have been following Kamichu, which has has been looking very promising. However, it's looking more and more like nobody's making a serious attempt to fansub it. ADTRW^H^H^H^H^H MEYRIN did a few episodes, but they've been saying they'll drop it from the start, and they also didn't seem to think too highly of their own work on it. Nobody else has gotten past episode one.

This is a damn shame, since it's such an appealing series. We've floated the idea now and again that maybe we should pick it up, but nothing's definite been decided. So I thought I'd float the idea to the larger community: Would anyone be interested in seeing us subbing it? I can't guarantee that we'd manage to keep it up better than the others, but we could take a stab at it.

So, good idea? Anybody wanting to help out with translation (we're always short-staffed when it comes to that, like everyone else)? Thoughts?

Good question. On the one hand, a lot of people are probably waiting for ep 4. On the other hand, if MEYRIN is still going to continue, it would a bit rude to them. Also, a lot of people are unahppy with MKVs, so for new viewers it would be better to start from 1.

8 Name: Jedi_Vader20!KxPtEJqYRA!!ORJ7wOxD 05/08/09(Tue)12:36 ID:Heaven [Del]

So we'd be looking at HardSub AVI?

I say hunt down the HDTV raws, that way I can crunch down the image size, and get higher quality :D

9 Name: Excalibur 05/08/09(Tue)13:51 ID:HVC1mhib [Del]

People are unhappy with MKV? ponder I can't quite figure that out. I'm unhappy with OGM :) I'd prefer if everyone did MKV so that it would be easier to fix subtitle issues. Not only that, but you can embed ssa subtitles in an MKV instead of just plain old srt subs.

If you do HardSub AVI, I guess that'd be ok, but I'd prefer the soft subs and I really think it'd be helpful to you guys. If you don't want to do the MKV route, think about releasing the raw (with certain things like signs and text hardsubbed) + ssa (for the main speech). Most video players these days support soft subs if the name of the sub file and video are the same...

Anyway, I've never heard of nor seen this anime but I'd like to see you guys pick up something new. Emma was great (and still is) but I think your talents would be wasted if you stopped subbing :)

People are unhappy with MKV because it won't play on their machines even after setting them up to play fansubs - that is, AVI with mp3 sound and xvid. Nobody likes to be forced to install more crap on their machines, and that's quite a reasonable attitude, really. MKV only has advantages for power users and people obsessed with video quality - for the regular user, it's just like AVI except it's harder to get it working.

11 Name: Freak of Nature 05/08/09(Tue)16:38 ID:oeVRLWHK [Del]

All true. What's more, my machine is set up to play MKVs, yet I've been having a lot of trouble with the sound and video "stuttering" on MEYRIN's subs.

What it boils down to is that making a fansub that only 5% of the audience can watch, because the rest don't have the required kit, is sort of... well... I don't know any politer way to put this... stupid.

12 Name: Anonymous 05/08/09(Tue)16:50 ID:WoTH0lQu [Del]

Sound and video stuttering is probably due to the HDTV quality which is VERY HIGH quality and some slower machines have trouble with that.

You're probably right, but that just goes to prove my point.

I'd love it to see Kamichu subbed by you. I vote yes! Whether it's MKV or AVI I'll be grateful.

15 Name: Excalibur 05/08/10(Wed)04:02 ID:uHhhz115 [Del]

Video quality has nothing to do with MKV, power users have nothing to do with MKV. It's just a media container just like OGM or AVI, it's just more flexible.

Now, one issue I see here, you automatically think that the audio is mp3 and video is xvid. I've run into quite a few MKV that have real media, mpeg, and divx video and ogg, mp3, and other audio. The problem is, if you're having issues with MKV, you don't have the proper drivers installed.

Google k-lite mega codec pack:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack.htm

This will get you EVERYTHING you need to watch MKVs with little to no fuss. Real Media and Quicktime without installing the proprietary players, and other things.

MKV actually has lower overhead than AVI and OGM and to top it off, it's very flexible.

Don't get me wrong, I'll go for Hardsubbed stuff, I just prefer MKV because of how flexible it is. It also runs rather well on my wife's 500mhz machine, our 1ghz p3 machine, my celeron laptop, and my main box without problems. All I did was install the K-Lite pack and that was it.

Explorer constantly crashes with OGM so as soon as I run into that crap, I mux it to MKV ;) heh

I'm looking forward to this series and I certainly hope you guys sub it!

The point you missed is this: We don't want to tell people what they have to do to play our files. If we have to do that, we've already lost the vast majority of our audience, who do not want to install files, or read forums, or search on Google to watch their anime.

We adapt to the viewers, not the other way around. This is the first rule of being user friendly.

I'm already running the K-lite mega codec pack, and you're completely missing the point.

As WAHa.06x36 explained, it's a question of optimal accessibility. If you place the bar artificially high, you'll just be annoying your potential audience.

Haha. K-lite. Haha*.

>ADTRW^H^H^H^H^H MEYRIN did a few episodes, but they've been saying they'll drop it from the start, and they also didn't seem to think too highly of their own work on it.

I didn't put out the first episode as officially Studio ADTRW because I was embarassed at the poor translation. After that it just sort of became impossible to change.

At the moment, it looks like episode 4 would be almost impossible to translate well with only the resources we already have (it has a lot of complex military language, although 5 and 6 are apparently very simple again). I had a sort of discussion with WAHa about combining efforts, but he went to sleep and it didn't restart afterwards.

As another note, the guy on Share who's been encoding our HDTV raws hasn't posted 5 and 6 yet, so he might have vanished. And if you don't feel like having ADVANCED HIGH DEFINITION TECHNOLOGY, you might as well wait until the 24th and have an R2 DVD source.

I'm all for it. I've got nothing against mkv, and one can say that the encoding is...marvelleous ;D But as some has said, MEYRIN isn't tiptop with the t/l. Feels more they are trying to make someone else interested in doing it.

22 Name: Lyn Annouilh 05/08/13(Sat)13:28 ID:Heaven [Del]

I miss the topic a while earlier, sorry for the clone.

I can't read the x264 codec encodes. Meyrin Encode Policy pisse me off, because i can't read any of their files. I don't know what they want to do in the fansub community, but many users seems to have issues with the Meyrin/ADTRW releases. It's sad... I'm waiting for some other fansubs for the time being. It's really frustrating.

Well, here's the story so far: We (that is, mogura) helped MEYRIN out with getting ep 4 done:

http://raspberryheaven.net/~adtrw/torrents/Kamichu!-04_HDTV_720p_%5BMEYRIN-iitran%5D.mkv.torrent

The MEYRIN files use the full HDTV resolution at 1280x720, which means you need a pretty beefy processor to play them. When we get around to doing our encodes, we'll scale them down to something that's easier to handle.

None of these posts are helping to solve any problems. They're basically just arrogant "If you can't see it, it's your own problem" noises. As I said in my earlier post, it makes no difference how good your fansub quality is, if a large percentage of the potential audience can't watch it.

So say something constructive and helpful, or naff off.

I personally love the fact they are doing softsubs. It feels closer to the stack of VHS fansubs in my closet.
Fuck you karaoke whores.

I don't like the mvk though. What I wish they would do is make a torrent for the HDTV and a torrent for a lower sized encode. Then just release the .ssa file so we can use vobsub

I'm personally agreeing with the idea of hardsub AVI for all the good reasons above. And for an answer where it's due, sure, I like linux, and it's my primary OS, but it has many weaknesses, one of which I'll generally call "interface". Playing and managing files in linux generally gives me the shits.

Linux can play any video format, no problem. Right after I compile my goddamned player. And that's after I go and download all the src for the core, and then all the codecs I want...

Other stuff to take into account: I know one or two people who use their DVD player to watch anime. While things are improving, support for softsubs in dedicated players is pretty hit and miss. Hardsubbed AVI is fine, thank you.

Unless you're going to offer me something nice, like multiple subtitle streams, or perhaps AC3 audio, just use AVI. (and don't hack AVI to insert an AC3 stream. Please...)

That said, I do like the odd softsub as well. If I can get HD raws and some subs, that's cool. Hell, if I can get any raw and some subs that means they didn't spend more time timing the gratuitous karaoke than the rest of the episode, that's even cooler.

I like karaoke, a lot of people do. The karaoke I want is just the romaji. Kanji is a wank. Translation, while nice, is irrelevant. When was the last time the words to a song made any sense? And why do people insist on making the karaoke dance? I'm dead serious when I say karaoke has gone downhill. There are far too many subs where the lyrics are hard to read. What's the fucking point!?

Releasing .ssa files separately does have its advantages, as you say, but the problem is that this is also far too tricky to get to play correctly for most people. AVI hardsubs are still the most accessible way to release fansubs.

I cant believe this. Finally someone subs a show in HDTV without a reencode and softsubs (no noise, no reencode, no quality loss, adjustable, etc.) and most of you guys are complaining.

And dont give me this "omg its mkv" crap. Just use MPC or VLC or take your freaking 2 Minutes to install the Matroska Pack or CCCP.

The anime itself rules and its rather sad that no "real group" is subbing it. Nonetheless we get a version which other groups would never release (did I already mention HDTV, Raw quality and softsubs?) and all you do is complain.

At 4chan somebody said he wouldnt even care if it were just .rm quality like in the old days. You guys are so damn ungrateful. I didnt read a single "thank you for your subs/effort" in this thread. Im thankful that they are still releasing it and hopefully will not drop it because some ****** think they have the right to complain.

...and I am happy to report that somehow (though I'm fecked if I know which part of it did the trick) I am now able to play these files without problems.

However, this does not alter my position that the format is unusable for a general release, because a disproportionate number of users will be unable to view it. It must be considered a supplementary format, for connoisseurs.

I think Kamichu! is the best series of this season so I hope someone will keep translating it. My Japanese isn't up to that, but I would be happy to do editing/polishing up or timing - provided I can get a raw or audio track I can actually play properly!

I vote for soft subs, they are much more flexible, e.g. if they're too small for your display you can pick a bigger font.
You can also turn them off for a clean display (nice during OP/ED to get rid of masses of unnecessary text and lyrics that most fansubs suffer from these days!)

I think the main trouble with the raw files that are coming out is not the MKV format, which here contains standard XVID (thank goodness!!), but that it is variable frame rate. Although ffdshow can play it ok, VirtualDubMod can't decompress it properly for editing: the ED comes out badly corrupt due (I think) to only 24 of the 30 frames per sec ED being decompressed. I wonder if the lack of fansubbers might be something to do with difficulties with the raw.

Some tips:

  1. If the subs won't play, put them in a .srt or .ssa file with the same name as the video and ffdshow et al should then pick them up no problemo. I actually prefer a raw + standalone subs file.

2. Stuttering HDTV video.
a) Forget 3D benchmarks, what you need a graphics card that can handle 2D textures / mpeg acceleration of 1280x720. If not, the video overlay won't be used and your cpu will have to do it all. With a good enough 2D video card even a 1GHz cpu should cope.

b) Use the official ffdshow-20041012 codec and NOT the unofficial 2005 H264 build found in the CCCP & K_Lite codec packs, as according to Milan Cutka it has all cpu optimisations turned off (due to the wrong compiler being used) and thus plays like a dog unless you have a very fast cpu. This alone probably accounts for much of the grief of stuttering hi res video playback.

There's some problems with the kamichu 5v2 subs - timing errors that actually break the subs entirely in BSplayer.

Mostly works in media player classic, though "what happens to yurie" stays on-screen for several minutes at least.

They should be simple errors to fix (it looks like they are just overlapping timecodes), but I can't seem to get virtualdubmod to work with the SRT I exported and then fixed. <grr>

59 Name: Anonymous 05/09/07(Wed)10:22 ID:RFUphmYb [Del]

SRTs are just plain text files; if you know the approximate time the error occurs, it should be easy enough to fix it with a normal text editor.

Quick question regarding the raws themselves. Usually the DVD is preferred over broadcast raws due to greater quality. I've not been watching Kamichu myself, but from what I understand, it's being subbed at HDTV res. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this make the braodcast raws actually better than what DVD can offer? If this is indeed the case, the only advantage I can see in DVD raws is the lack of ads and general "cleanliness" during subbing.

74 Name: !WAHa.06x36 05/09/13(Tue)16:32 ID:/kYtdog6 [Del]

Supposedly the HDTV raws are upsampled. They are also re-compressed, which the DVD raws wouldn't be. As we wouldn't release files at HDTV res anyway, the DVD is a much better choice.

No, by Guide, I mean that we're (strongly) considering doing something like the "whispers' guide to the world of Emma" that we did for the Emma subs.

For Kamichu!, we're working on some explanations of the little details of Japanese culture and religion that aren't readily understandable by Westerners. For ep. 1, I've written some material on omikuji.

It's great to hear that you're willing to take on this project. The extras from the DVDs are hopefully worth the wait. Take your time getting things done. I waited this long for Mahou to finish Tsukuyomi, so I can wait for the DVD rips of Kamichu (^_^). Just my luck that I prefer shows like Mahou Shoujo Tai, Petopeto-san and Ichigo Mashimaro instead of the dozen versions of Tsubasa and Naruto. Kamichu has been very enjoyable so far.

Oh yes! We appreciate it! Origatou iitran!!! I'm all over this torrent right now. I just woke up half an hour ago and look what I find!!! This HAS to be a great day!!! Now, really, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the hard work guys. You're doing a really great job. I'm kinda picky when it comes to almost anything, including anime encodes and let me tell you by experience that there are groups out there that have months or even years encoding without reaching the quality you've reached. Personally I think that AVI is OK while you don't need special font encoding or multiple audio channels and if you use a good video codec (and use it well of course). So, while I still dun know which codec are you using since I've been using CCCP for month's now I'm pretty sure that whichever it is you already know how to handle it pretty well, since your filesizes are small and the quality very high. Well, Xvid is good (better than DivX in my opinion) but nothing surpases the quality of h264 at the moment, so maybe you can think of swtiching some day, just an opinion. So you can make video size bigger ;)
Anyway, thanks again for the hard job and please keep up the good work! n_n'

Mistranslation (I think) around 13:46 when the three Gods of video formats are drinking, one of them is referred to as VHD. I think that is actually VCD (which makes more sense).

thanks Nojay for your feedback.
Actually, Kurata(screenplay) and Masunari(director) officially says this, during the audio commentary on DVD (during 13:46-13:53), that they are the kami of VD, VHD and LD. :)
Also this is the okama's original design sketch. you can see 'VHD' written there (and also a god of CD which was delieted from the actual show).

and i'll always be open for any comments/suggestions as to translations, and appreciate them. thank you! :)

Episode 3 "features" reduced typesetting on signs... depending on time, episode 4 may be the same way.

Also, one sign got lost: the popsicle sticks say something like: "sorry, try again" (you can see the popsicle sticks in episode 2).

Another detail: the vehicle that splashes into the water says "Nichibotsu(sunset) Bank". It is a cash transport vehicle, so when it disappears into the sea, the bank lost a lot of money. (detail from Mogura)

Hey guys, I think it's great that youre working on Kamichu and everything but I cannot understand the bad encoding quality of your subs. You even use DVD source raws. If the filesize is the problem, no one said fansubs have to be <175Mb. Make the file as big as it needs to be for a better quality. Even the fake HDTV raws looked way better.

  1. The encode quality is excellent.
  2. Bigger filesizes, contrary to popular belief, does not automatically mean higher quality. A high-quality DVD source will produce a better encode at lower filesize than a noisy TV capture at higher file size.
  3. Fansubs are not, I repeat, not, meant to be substitutes for the actual DVDs. If you want DVD quality, buy the DVDs.

182:

The encode is pretty true to the DVDs--I applied some, but not a lot of sharpening. Some people prefer more sharpening--a lot of Japanese encoders apply a LOT of sharpening and many fansubbers add even more (who can forget the epidemic of way-over-warpsharpened fansubs from about two years ago?) I like it a bit more subtle.

For the technically minded, an xvid q2 encode of this video comes out to be 27MB larger than this one--not much difference.

184: To my knowledge, neither C1 Anime nor Ichiban-fansubs/Destiny-fansubs have dropped this series. Kamichu! is one of the most oversubbed little known series from Q3 2005. grin.

I just read this thread through in its entirety, and a lot of it -at the onset, anyway- was about container format, softsubs, filesize etc. The people banding together to do this series seemes against MKV/softsubs on the grounds that it is trickier for the lower denominator to get running and that the format is only used/promoted by quality buffs.

Ignoring the unintended implication that Iitran is not interested in quality, two early quotes from two of the team members are significant:

17 (WAHa.06x36) "We adapt to the viewers, not the other way around. This is the first rule of being user friendly."

18 (Freak of Nature) ..."you'll just be annoying your potential audience." [not using AVI/MP3]

Service-mindedness is an admirable sentiment, perhaps only second to quality orientation, and therefore I'd like to point out the following:

  • A growing trend in the fansubbing community atm is moving to larger filesizes (HQ encodes), h.264, MKV/MP4 and softsubs. There are numerous examples - Shinsen-Subs, Kaizoko Fansubs and Eclipse immediately jumps to mind though there are many more. Many groups call this a transition time and release two versions -vanilla AVI and spiffed-up MKVs- but with the implication that a switch to MKV/MP4 only will be made.
  • The number of MKV users is way higher than the alledged 5%. Basically all DVD rippers use MKV, and if not most than a high percentage of all anime fans watch DVD rips, which implies that MKV/MP4 has moved into the mainstream. Even the vocal minority trolling the major boards are quieting down on the topic. Basically, AVI-only is a thing of the past.
  • With the CCCP one-click solution there is no longer any difficulties remaining for even virtually technically illiterate people to get softsubbed MKV/MP4 playback up and running with absolutely minimal additional components added, and no hassle for groups helping users with playback problems: just refer to the www.cccp-project.net and let THEM handle help requests. Delegation, cooperation and quality at its best.

There was also talk about the quality of the iitran encodes being on par with the DVD. If this is true then the DVD sources must be worse than the fake HDTV ones. I frame-by-frame compared selected scenes from iitran and adtrw's versions and the HDTV encodes had significantly more details and less smoothing than the DVD versions, which is not suprising since (regardless of the "DVD source --> higher quality @ lower filesizes than HDTV encodes" claim) they are almost 200 megs smaller! Though there is merit in that a good source can produce finer results at lower filesizes than poor sources, there are good reasons most DVD rippers aim for 233 -- 350 MB encodes from DVDs.

Thus, in conclusion, being truly user-friendly and adjusting to the audience would thus entail resleasing HQ MKV softsubs too. This is obviously not a novel idea to iitran since you're planning the same with the Emma DVD releases. I see no real issues with releasing both for the low and high ends of the userbase at the same time, in fact, it is a waste of a wonderful series and (hopefully good) DVD sources no to do so!

I have thouroughly enjoyed previous Iitran work and in the hope of that the same quality and pride that goes into translations and extras also find their way into encodes and support base awareness/accomodation I look forward to do the same in the future!

Thanks and regards!

Re: .mkvs and codec packs...

I run the CCCP set of codecs on my machine. Sometimes when I play back an .mkv I get both audio streams simultaneously. I don't know why this happens and I don't know how to fix it.

I use an old-style video card for assorted reasons (it does a very high-quality video grab, for one thing, its drivers are very stable too). The CCCP really wants me to use a DirectX-capable card otherwise the subtitle splitter gets all huffy about overlay and such. Trying to replay old .ogms also causes problems -- I can end up with two sets of subtitles sometimes.

Standard hardsubbed .avis just work, period. Even .avi with associated subtitle.ssa or .srt files are OK; they're a mature technology. MKV replay isn't quite there yet.

> Iitran is not interested in quality

This is correct. We are not out to replace DVDs. Neither should any other fansubbing group. You mention DVD ripping groups - that's plain and simple piracy, which is not what fansubbing is about.

Once again, if you want the DVD quality, buy the DVDs.

198 Name: Kayle : 2005-12-07 13:05 ID:H9O5nNJO [Del]

Roughly speaking, switching away from avi would enable one thing: variable framerate. There have been several 30fps pans which I've had to decimate to 24fps--visible as rather rough moving pans. There are some additional minor technical benefits, and would also make it reasonable to use H.264 for video and ogg vorbis or AAC for audio for smaller file sizes.

199 Name: Squeeks : 2005-12-07 13:15 ID:kYYbVPJ5 [Del]

Here is a basic fact that needs to be mentioned once again:

We will never get it 100% right for everybody

Do you understand that? You Mr/s knowitall may have come to your scientific conclusion that we should be providing you with whatever fancy-pants or obscure format and for Mr Encoder to bust his chops to provide. If we were doing this for one person, that would be okay. But see, we don't cater for one person. We are catering for over 80,000 individual IP addresses according to my webserver logs.

I think for as long as Mr Encoder and the team create a commonplace, known format that the large majority of users can use , that's all that is needed. For everyone else, shut the fuck up. If you can't any commonplace format, your problem, not ours.

200 Name: Mikademus : 2005-12-07 15:03 ID:k41/J+Is [Del]

First, @ 196: " I use an old-style video card for assorted reasons (it does a very high-quality video grab, for one thing, its drivers are very stable too). MKV replay isn't quite there yet."

You have chosen an older solution for personal reasons. With that choise comes accepting corresponding restrictions. It is your prerogative to make that choise. But -rather than accepting the consequences thereof- to try to restrict other people's choises for your benefit is sheer arrogance (though a very common such).

Second, given that you who have replied to me personally are actually representatives of Iitran, that's just sad. I had never thought you'd stoop to ad hominem attacks, name-calling and "shut up and get lost" argumentats. It should have been obvious from my letter that I'm not a vocal teen with an attitude, and I made the mistake to beleive you'd be the same.

>> Iitran is not interested in quality

"This is correct. We are not out to replace DVDs. Neither should any other fansubbing group. You mention DVD ripping groups - that's plain and simple piracy, which is not what fansubbing is about. Once again, if you want the DVD quality, buy the DVDs."

WaHa, I mentioned DVD rippers not to promote DVD copying but to establish that MKV is no longer a fringe format for techological pioneers. You use DVD sources for fansubs, as do basically all fansubbers who can get hold of them. You -purposely?- misread me as promoting R1 DVD rips, but my argument about DVD sources and quality is still valid unless the encoder purposely strives for diminished quality. But, given that all here share that sentiment, it would make you relatively alone among fansubbers today.

Sqeeks, you might "cater" for 80.000 IPs, if flinging unprocessed and meaningless statistics makes you proud (though exactly who it is you cater for is unknown, but you probably have an idea of the "ideal" user who might or might not exist or be representative). Other groups cater for many more than that -iitran is a small group- and several of these do provide two (or more) versions to chose from. Perhaps because they understand the different desiers of their fans. Mr Encoder has created a commonplace, easily usable, stable, feature-packed, future-safe and very well known format with extremely wide support. Even among fansubbes. Thus, no shutthefuckuping needed, by your own criteria. And I doubt that the encoder who has difficulties understanding the benefits of using a not obsolete container would be bursting his balls over his encodings, or if he does, would perhaps see that he will suffer less scrotumnal ruptures if he switched or learned improved techniques.

Kayle, in #198, gave some examples of benefits, if you're willing to look, there are more. Welcome to #darkhold; say hi from me is you wish.

201 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2005-12-07 15:25 ID:FZqyit5g [Del]

Do try to read the thread, and you'll see that people do have problems playing MKV. It is, far, far from "commonplace, easily usable, stable". A number of people specifically thank us for not using it, as they've been unable to view MEYRIN files.

And here's a hint: you're being condenscending and arrogant. Nobody will listen to you with that attitude. We know about MKV, and its benefits. We still decided to make AVI files. Your treating everyone as idiots who do not understand the superiority of the format is not going to change anyone's mind.

Now kindly drop the subject.

I used to encode for iitran, that is, until my server died and I lost the Kamichu DVD ISO and handed the reins over to Kayle.

Before we even started subbing Kamichu, someone like-minded to you came into our IRC channel and recommended that we use MKV for our release of Kamichu, along with AVC video, AAC audio, and SSA subtitles.

Now, I had next to no problems with this, apart from the fact that SSA subtitles are grossly undersupported on any platform that isn't windows, and that you do need a fair bit more processing power to decode AVC video than vanilla XviD video.

There are still fansub watchers out there that use a celeron five hundred and something out in their living room that is tweaked for maximum performance on XviD playback. Playing AVC on such a platform is near impossible, you'd achieve choppy playback.

We do like to cater for everyone, but we don't want to go chopping the legs off those who are less well off and can't afford a kickass PC. I love MKV. I really do. Anything I rip that has subtitles instantly goes into MKV, so that I don't have 3 files, it's a wonderful container format.

However, as much as MKV might be "taking off", the standard is still ~175MB hardsub XviD/MP3 AVI, and that is what we will stick to.

Vader, out.

AVC encoders aren't anywhere near good enough yet that I'd want to switch to them. Maybe if x264 didn't look worse than ffmpeg4 (+ trellis + temporal mask + some other wacky tuning) at 120MB (a smaller size being the only decent reason to switch to anything if you aren't switching from VIVO) while being unplayable slow on my laptop that I can't afford to replace it would be better.

Something that had been bugging me for a while is solved... In episode 3 when Yurie is working at the temple with Yashima-sama making good-luck charms, the cardboard box beside her has some hiragana printed on it, "みかん". I finally looked it up: tangerines. I had noticed another similar box with the same hiragana printed on it in an Adachi anime "Hiatari Ryoukou" where someone had it in their room presumably for storage. Is this a regular thing in Japan or just an odd coincidence?

Ah, well spotted. You've hit upon a fixture of Japanese life, Nojay: the mikan box.

Bear in mind that Japanese homes are generally smaller than ours, and that furnishings are often makeshift, especially for young, mobile people like college students. Since people also sit on the floor, any object the size of a box will serve perfectly well as makeshift table / bookcase / organizer / whatever. Often, when you move into an apartment in Japan, your neighbours will drop by and introduce themselves, bringing with them a mikan box or two.

In short, the humble mikan box is everywhere, being used for all purposes. Of course, sometimes they say other things than mikan - ringo ("apple"), for instance.

Guess I should have put this in a Guide point - but I didn't really think it was that noticeable. I'll do better next time.

You can think of it as a bit of a Japanese meme, if you want.
As FoN has already said, the humble mikan box appears everywhere. I get the impression it's just meant to be a little aberrant thing, and it's silly, above all. A poor homeless girl will probably be found sitting in a mikan box, as an example. They're just everywhere.

<mikan>See, now I'm rambling and making no sense...</mikan>

In Denmark, the equivalent (back in the day) was the old-fashioned wooden beer crates. Later on, they went out of production, and plastic milk crates partially replaced them. Oddly enough, you can still see the old wooden crates in use - and they sometimes show up in antique furniture and curio stores, as antiques. Really. I'm not kidding.

well, i give you credit of a thing, IITRAN is a little more intelligent than chuchuchuu that is releasing in 264 and matroska.. one should try hard to find a less compatible and overabundant format than that. i know that they want to make excellent(::) fansub because they don't buy the original thing, so the fansub it's all that they have, but "normal" people maybe prefer a more compatible format, that can be watch without 200 codecs installed and not 300/400 mb for episode.

235 Name: Nojay : 2006-01-04 11:52 ID:+jBKnd2E [Del]

They do the release, they get to decide how they're going to do it. The h.264 codec is getting to be more common; I've not watched all of this episode from chuchuchuu but it seems to be a good-quality release technically speaking and it's 180Mb in size which is consistent with most xVid .avi hardsubs out there. As for .mkv containerisation it does allow me the option of switching off subtitles for clean screen grabs or later updates to the subtitle files if bugs are spotted. Right now though there will be other fansubbers who will release this episode as a hardsub .avi. In two years time there may not be anyone doing so but by that time the codecs and replay mechanisms available to us will be a lot better.

I've seen some fansubs and raw anime released as .rmvb -- now that I can't see any reason for.

In two years, I don't think anyone will be using h.264 in MKV with Vorbis audio. The official container for h.264 is .mp4 (which is just quicktime .mov), with AAC audio.

> I've seen some fansubs and raw anime released as .rmvb -- now that I can't see any reason for.

RV10 is more efficient for anime than even H.264. It's also even more annoying to set up players for.

Kamichu is one of those rare shows that I like so much, I'm tempted to just go ahead and buy the R2 discs. Even the covers are beautiful, from the pictures I've seen. The only problem is that pesky "I barely understand any Japanese" thing.

If I were to purchase R2 discs, would you possibly be willing to share your scripts with me for the purpose of making personal, never-to-be-made-public subbed versions? Trying to use SubRip, or redoing things by hand just ends up being too much work for one person even for a show this good. Encoding and minor formatting/timing adjustments aren't a problem for me though.

After mentioning this idea in ADTRW, Mr VacBob suggested I post here with my request. You seem to have things well under control staff wise, but nevertheless, I'd be happy to offer any assistance possible for this project. I'll keep an eye on this thread for your response and preferred method of contact should you decide to grant my request.

Thanks for your excellent work on this series.

I've noticed something weird about Kamichu!... It is set in the modern day -- the girls all wear safety helmets on their bikes and there are lots of other clues that it's up to date like the weapons and tanks in episode 4. So why are the TV set and the telephone in the Hitotsubashi's house so old? The kotatsu episode (no. 11) shows their TV doesn't even have a remote control and their telephone is the old NTT dial type from more than 20 years ago (complete with doilies). Anyone else notice this?

I have my suspicions but I need to investigate a bit further; it may be that this is due to the producers indulging in a bit of homage with respect to another piece of Japanese film history. Mata ne.

The fact is, this kamichu is set in the 80's!
The director says so, and there's some other clues in the video.
(of course including those phone and TV you mentioned)
The line "You're already dead" is a quote from Hokuto no Ken which started in 1983, and the prime minister who appears in ep4 resembles Nakasone who was known for close relationship with Ronald Reagan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakasone

i should've said it when i explained about VHD and LD format thing earlier...
anyway, it's not up to date, but it's in the 80's. :)

Message 240, about Kamichu! being set in the 80s...

Right, thanks for clearing that up. I had assumed Kamichu! was contemporary with some 80s touches but that makes a bit more sense.

Nobuhiko Obayashi is a film director who made a series of films in the 80s called the Onomichi Trilogy in guess where? Onomichi. I recently got one of them on DVD ("Tenkousei") and that's where I saw things like the 80s telephone (with the cloth doilies) and the old wooden-cased Sony TV set. In addition there's a number of camera angles that also appear in Kamichu! or associated materials -- the DVD cover of disc 5 shows the three girls coming down a steep stair and across the railway line. This is a shot used a couple of times in Tenkousei. The stair leads up to one of the temples, I think.

There are still anachronisms here and there in Kamichu! though -- just looking at the old film and the new drawings of the stairs, Kamichu! has an automatic barrier at the place the steps cross the railway line whereas it's not present in the 1980s movie. Nitpickers'R'Us.

246 Name: mogura : 2006-01-09 14:39 ID:AjR4GvnH [Del]

Oh, my. I never thought anyone here would watch Obayashi's film.
Yes, that's correct. there are several scenes that appear both in his movie and kamichu. and you might know this but when Obayashi was a kid, he was a student of the school where yurie studies in kamichu. (the school is an elementary school in real life, not junior high.)
The model of Raifuku Shrine also appears in Tenkosei, and the model of yurie's house appears in his other film called "Futari".
sorry you guys, it's a bit off-topic again.

http://homepage3.nifty.com/hitopon/hito_google_maps_anime_comic-holyplace.html has locations in Kamichu (and a lot of other series) mapped out, if you can read the Japanese.

249 Name: Nojay : 2006-01-11 00:47 ID:+jBKnd2E [Del]

I've ripped down a bit of the extra stuff off the "Tenkousei" DVD which includes some 8mm footage Obayashi filmed when he was a youngster growing up in Onomichi (ca. 1963) as well as a modern-day travelogue compered by him (meant for JAL in-flight entertainment I think). It focuses on the locations of the original 1980s Onomichi Trilogy but the Kamichu! fanatics among us might recognise some landmarks here and there. And it's got seifukus!

You can download it from here (about 90Mb, xVid):

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=KFQS8EUF

If Iitran want to BitTorrent it I'm copacetic with that. Subtitling it would be a challenge as Obayashi-san's Japanese is definitely not Tokyo-standard...

Oh, and just to be circular, it appears the countryside around Onomichi is famous for its groves of mikan (tangerine) trees, so now we know where Yurie-sama got her mikan box from.

I had been looking for a translator for the Kamichu manga since around July-August. In fact, it's because of Kamichu that bothered learning how to edit scans. After expending several options I decided to post a request in the Raspberry-Heaven forums (where MEYRIN was posting their progress on the anime) not knowing what else to do. Mogura (using the name "cue") responded about a week later. I really didn't care how many other groups the person was working for as long as I could work on Kamichu, and never knew until later that she worked for iitran.

Dynasty-Scans doesn't have a great deal of involvement on the project since I exclusively do all of the proofreading and editing for it (since I seem to be the biggest fan on the group), but it is hosted on our http and xdcc servers which is reason enough to put our name on it.

I doubt it'll ever see Region 1 (unless Disney spots it) so "iitran, you're our only hope" <cough>.

I'm considering purchasing the series in R2 for my son's Japanese teacher to show as an alternative to her annual Totoro showing. She almost swooned when I showed her the first couple of episodes of Kamichu!

I dunno. She's got glasses and she's reading a book. There are thousands of characters that fit that description. She doesn't even look very much like Yomiko Readman -- her jawline is too full. At any rate, I think the whole "Yomiko Readman makes a cameo appearance" thing is silly.

At the beginning of episode 6 (DVD version) of Kamichu! we see the class exam listings posted up on the noticeboard. I had a look for Yomiko Readman's name but didn't see it. I was assuming the kanji for Yomiko was (yomi: to read) + (katakana ko) but I've got no idea what the kanji for Readman would look like.

Question: would she be the study-bug type that would do well in exams and end up in the top rankings or would she be too busy reading and be trailing down at the bottom with Yurie-sama?

OK, so now I am very pleased, but confused. When I look at the torrents I see eps 1-3, but not 4-6... ?_?

And the reason I feel so strongly that your work is better has to do with the additional depth I feel in the translation. For example, when the girls go up on the roof to try and see what powers Yurie has, and she says, "I'm going to do something embarassing...?" it felt much more like something I would have said myself as a very young teenager.

I have no technical or language skills at all (except in English), or I'd offer to jump in...

293 Name: x : 2006-02-15 04:56 ID:uNu1ZTYd [Del]

Why don't you guys just use the same encoding for 1-3 (xvid?) instead of going to mkv? Not everyone has a DVD burner, and they will be happy to squeeze 4 eps onto a CD-R. Simple xvid will give sufficient quality without requiring lots of resource.

312 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2006-02-20 12:40 ID:Heaven [Del]

While I'm sure some people would be interested, I think the effort is better spent actually working on translations, rather than keeping a status page up to date. Besides, this isn't a production line - there isn't much of a status other than "working" and "done".

I've thought about doing a status page. Of course, keeping it up to date would be a challenge, plus I was afraid it'd put too much pressure on the encoder when things stacked up behind him... but I don't know if Vader could be feeling any more pressure than he is right now!

314 Name: square721bt@gmail.com : 2006-02-21 03:49 ID:aka7Yjdn [Del]

What's the problem with the encoding, if I could ask? I've done some encoding work myself, mostly transcoding DVDs to XviD, so I'm a little curious. Is this something I could possibly help out with?

The list of problems is hilarious long, and is definitely not limited to technical issues. However, there is hope. Soon now, soon!

The Sony website says that DVD disc 7 is now out, containing another unbroadcast episode. Only one more disc to go and then I find out how much the box set will cost me... ouch ouch ouch.

We had to go through A LOT of troubles really, but we're here at long last.
If it weren't for you whispers, EP 4 would never come out.
I really appreciate your hard work.
Thank you again whispers! :)

VERY nice work on Kamichu 4! And THANK YOU for continuing it!
You guys don't just subtitle it quick 'n dirty, you do a bang-up professional job explaining everything! I can hardly wait for the next one! (whenever that might come out). But I know you'll do it right. Keep up the great work, you may not see a lot of comments, but there are plenty of us out here enjoying it immensely! :-)

Is it me or is the audio in 48kb Mp3 format on Ep4? Looking at the details on FFDShow shows its in Lame Mp3 @ 48kbit... and it certainly sounds like it too. Hope its a mistake on my end...

No, it's a little encoding accident. Future episodes will be better.

330 Name: whispers : 2006-02-26 13:32 ID:aU9u/Zgw [Del]

Sorry, completely my fault. I'll be sure to avoid that mistake on episode 5, assuming the gang still lets me work on it. :)

Any chance for a lowly anonymous like me to get my hands on one of your raw materials so I can play around with encoding? ^^ ... maybe possibly I can contribute to the cause for this awesome anime in the future >3<

Posting from my laptop as my PC is out of action atm.

Sorry I couldn't get there to finish this episode. Have to wait a little to get my video card replaced as I don't have onboard video or a spare AGP 4x/8x card to put in.

I suppose that I still have Katamari Damacy to keep me company ;-;

Just want to thank the Kamichu! team for their work on the series. Bittersweet that I'll be waiting for Geneon so I can see the rest of the series but glad to see the series appears to be on the license track for R1.

Since you've taken the torrents down, I assume you're treating the unofficial announcement as "good enough".

Thanks again, and I'll miss the guides to Kamichu!.

(leaves to start budgeting for the DVDs)

I don't want to be a partpooper... but...

Why the bloody &%$" they dont mention the special DVD extra chapters???!!!

On the other hand, that "wallscroll withput bars" would look awesome in my room... I hope it's a Hanaharu ilustration (like the first volume cover), or at least one of the original DVD covers (the second one...)

340 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2006-03-05 21:23 ID:Heaven [Del]

They mention it's 16 episodes. That means 12 TV and 4 DVD extras.

Soooo... You won't work on Kamichu anymore...
That's a pity cause here I can't even buy the DVDs that are sold in America. And I wanted to finish watching this... T-T
Anyways... that's just my bad luck (living somewhere behind the moon... haha ^^v)...

Thank you for your hard work so far... ^-^
Please carry on subbing great Anime series!!!! ^____^

"Why the bloody &%$" they dont mention the special DVD extra chapters???!!!"

I think you need to slow down and chill for a moment, then reread what was actually posted on the Geneon Lounge announcement. ie, the following: "One title is 16 episodes that will be released in four volumes." given that the details for the other title is obvioulsy for Ichigo-whatever, the afore-quoted phrase must refer to Kamichu. Since the broadcast of Kamichu only contained 12 episodes and Geneon is quoting 16, it would indicate that they do indeed have the DVD eps. Given that Kamichu is coming from the same Japanese licensor as R.O.D the TV and Petite Cossette which both had stellar R1 releases from Geneon, I wouldn't be worrying much at all.

Good for them. They can enjoy their C&D. We don't like pissing off the american licensors.

We knew some pirate group would pick it up. The same will probably happen with Emma, as well. But we're not involved in any way.

Both. The dub direction is apparently by Jonathan Klein, though, and I've never liked any of his work (Haibane, NieA).

They are all in japanese, no subtitles in english, but pretty well done!
also be noted that they may have a bit of spoilers.

although they are made for amusing purpose only, if these videos unfit here, please tell me.
i'll delete the link right away.

I'd love to see more kamichu subbed. I got the 1st 3 eps. and liked it, but I haven't been able to get my hands on 4-5. I don't even care if yall keep up with it as long as it gets done eventually.

There's a new kami in class -- Kamiyama Samataro...

"Kamisama Kazoku" (God Family) is a new anime series just starting on Japanese TV that looks promising for fans of Kamichu! while they wait for the Geneon releases to come out. Right now (20 May) there are only raws of the first episode on BitTorrent.

http://best.paramnesiac.net/tracker/

From what I can gather watching the raw (plus a crib from AnimeDB) Samataro is the son of God, living in Japan with his family and going to school in the human world to prepare him to take over from his father. Unfortunately, being who he is he gets through life with minimal effort despite the prompting of his guardian angel, Tenko (tenshi-ko). Then an exchange student appears...

Looks to be wacky with a touch of ecchi, but only a slight hint -- the first episode involves "bloomers". Animation quality seems good but this may just be the production house spending big on the first few episodes to attract a viewing audience.

If the Giant Brains at Iichan are at a loose end after Kamichu! and Emma got licenced, they might consider the merest possibility of... well, you know.

358 Name: whispers : 2006-05-21 10:34 ID:q0nRL28Q [Del]

In three days of downloading, I have about 66% of the raw, and in the meantime ADTRW speedsubbed it.

359 Name: whispers : 2006-05-26 05:47 ID:aO5tIV/f [Del]

And for ep 2, by the time I got the raw from Share, the episode had already been speedsubbed.

No need for me to bother, I guess.

360 Name: Robert Sneddon : 2006-05-28 02:59 ID:MHdXQJh9 [Del]

A group called "orz" has started subbing "Kamisama Kazoku". http://orz.7chan.org/ The ADTRW speedsub is an ad-hoc project done by a single member of their team -- Chikushou. The speedsub titles implore the watcher to delete the file when a real group starts subbing the series.

Episode 2 is watchable although the storyline looks to be going down the well-trodden anime path of put-upon but well-meaning boy getting into embarrassing situations with the girl he likes while friends and assorted family members "help" him in the worst way. Samataro's guardian angel Tenko is a refreshing change though in that although she obviously harbours feelings for him she's determined to help him get the girl of his dreams instead of regarding her as a rabu rival to be opposed by fair means and foul. Art quality is staying good (although not up to Kamichu! standards). I spotted two "Haibane Renmei" references in the closing titles of episode 1 and ep. 2 just confirms the trend when you see Tenko's bathing suit. Tenko also has the same problem with her hair that Rakka had. She's definitely the stand-out character for me in this series.

Administrative point: is it worth starting another thread for discussion of this series on the board? Is there anyone else interested?

361 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2006-05-31 08:11 ID:4Po4NEHN [Del]

The Triad were going to do it, but they dropped it because it turned out not being all that interesting.

Got it. The dub is perfect, which is good because the subtitles are a little TOO literal (in an attempt to please animeondvd posters?).

364 Name: samatarou : 2006-06-18 07:20 ID:kXO7ugk3 [Del]

Is there somewhere here or raspberry heaven etc where Kamisama Kazoku is being discussed? I see the torrents linked to from other sites but i can't find them on ADTRW's own torrent page nor any discussion of the fansubbing.
