He obviously reads our work, as he says "William Jounes" (the official spelling is "Jounse," but I've spelled it differently for reasons I'll get into in a separate post soon.

If anyone was interested in the raw episode, you can get it via bittorrent at www.saiyaman.info/bt.

However, be prepared for a slow download. O.o;;

Yes, but the reviewer didn't bother to watch the episode very carefully. Lots of mistakes and misunderstandings.

Just once, I'd like to see a reviewer that doesn't misunderstand something.

Hi all,

Hope my reviews aren't totally incomprehensible and fairly on the money - my Japanese isn't great, but I'm pretty sure I'm understanding the episodes fairly well. I don't like writing huge long episode synopses because then it shows when I get things wrong!

Although I've read iichan's scans, I decided to call William Jones rather than Jounes or Jounse because, well, it looks more normal. Of course, Victorian London blah blah blah, but I prefer the spelling. So sue me :)

Anyway, just popped in to say thanks to iitran for subbing Emma - it really deserves a big audience in my opinion, plus it really helps for the cultural stuff - despite being English myself, I had no idea what the tea leaves on the floor thing was for. Nowadays they just teach us about wars in history lessons...

Ah, well, I like "Jones", too. The Japanese katakana say "JO-NZU", so it could be either one, although internal evidence in the manga seems to indicate that the more common "Jones" was what was always intended.

But a decision was made, way back when, to pick "Jounes" ( a valid name of the period) for the manga translation, and we stuck by that in the anime translation, out of loyalty to the long tradition of whispers' translations of the manga, and because we knew the regular readers of the manga would {accept/expect/resign themselves to/throw a fit over/dance a jig while singing the lyrics to} that.

I'm rather interested in the fact that nobody seems to have picked up on the fact that nearly all the upper-class persons we have encountered so far have non-English names. "Jones", for instance, is a patronymic (for the given name John) which is mostly associated with Wales. Similarly, we can see (in Ep. 2, to be released as soon as possible, rest assured), on William's desk, a letter from someone with the German name Heinrichs, and there is another German upper-class family appearing later in the storyline. And then, of course, there is Hakim... ;-)

Umm... Professionally, I'm an historian, myself. And yes, quite often, one tends to focus on stuff like wars and other forms of conflict, because that holds the audience's attention better - and like it or not, teaching history is very much a performing art.

That doesn't mean we historians don't have the capacity for telling other variations on the story. We just have a practical attitude to the general audience's attention span, whenever we attempt to do so.

While I find the ongoing Jones vs. Jounes vs. Jounse debate amusing at best (and annoying at worst), I am not going to fault you for using "Jones" in a review.

Is there a fault at 21.09? A graphical glitch while Emma is writing her diary. Or is it just me or the codecs?

First, thanks for again picking up this great overall series.

Second, unfortunate editing problems with episode 1: At 8:20 the subtitle says "She's not flighty like most maids of all works." 'Of all works' doesn't really make any sense. Also, there is a typo at 18:27 in ep 1. "Wny" instead of "Why". Lastly, between 21:08 and 21:09 there is a glitch in the video, an odd, multi-color, ragged 'bar' across a portion of the upper half of the video. I don't know if that's just a problem with the RAW you had to work with or not though.

I'm an idiot. I didn't notice this thread was from 2005 and for the 1st season. Apparently 'William' (whoever post #20 was from) didn't either. I'll just go ahead and apologize on behalf of us both. Sorry.

This thread was resurrected because a spammer posted to it, and with the title "first episode," your confusion is understandable.
